Stone structures have stood the test of time as compared to brick, wood and many other materials which have been tried over centuries in different parts of the world. Restoration has three distinct steps:
- Cleaning: This stage involves careful understanding of the structure, its time of construction, use of materials particularly if different types of stone have been used. In certain structures façade stone may be a soft stone, easy to dress which may have been used as a veneer over a brick wall within. Any deterioration due to environmental condition, chemical or ageing has to be dealt with meticulously.
- Restoration: Damages in parts or whole of certain portion of the building or an element therein needs to be restored or replaced with careful understanding of the place of origin of the stone.
- Coating: Protective coating if required should be provided taking care that the clear coat does not change the look of the stone façade, ideally the stone façade which has stood the test of time need not be provided with a protective coating unless there is no option.
